I had the pleasure of going to the Gymnastics Superstars Tour in Dallas over the weekend. To be honest, going in I thought it would be a little cheesy, especially for the guys. I mean, how manly can you be when you’re dancing around to Disney singers, right? But it wasn’t that way at all. The men did a great job. All of their routines were to either hip hop or rock, and most of them were really funny. I think my favorite was the their hip hop routine. They incorporated break dancing into a lot of it and they even did a group worm at one point, which may have been the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.
The girls routines were great too. Unfortunately Shayla wasn’t there. I believe she was at training camp. But the remaining girls were awesome, and you could definitely tell it was a hometown crowd for Nastia. She performed on both beam and floor. Both routines were absolutely beautiful. They also brought in WOGA’s Briley Casanova for a floor routine and Texas Dreams’ Chelsea Davis to do beam. They both did great and Chelsea’s beam routine was really cute. I'm glad they're including some local kids along the way.
Another surprise appearance was made by Carly Patterson, but not to do gymnastics! She performed 3 songs. They were a little more pop-y than I was expecting (I thought she sang country?). It was weird at first to see her singing instead of doing gymnastics with everyone else, but I thought she was pretty good.
All in all I was impressed by the show. There were some Cirque du Soleil elements to it, and fun gymnastics that you don’t get to see on the competition floor. It was exciting to see, and you could tell the gymnasts really enjoy doing it. But most importantly, it’s good for the sport. It was awesome to see that much gymnastics enthusiasm packed into one place. On the way out I actually had to dodge numerous little gymnasts doing cartwheels on the sidewalk, hoping to one day be just like Nastia.
I made a coverage page for the tour where you can find my video of the Dallas show and some pictures. The coverage page is open to you to upload your own pictures and videos you may have from any of the shows. I’m excited to see what everyone else has! Click here for the Tour coverage page
