This is the conclusion to the Kipping Process, an attempt to outline a strategic approach to teaching kips from the earliest level through to gymnasts training for level 5. It shows the drills and progressions I have seen work for coaches with more knowledge and experience than me.

This video contains parts II and III, which demonstrate drills for teaching the glide and the kip action.

Thank you to all those involved. You were very helpful.

I am trying to learn this skill as an adult, so I have to pike a lot to do the glide on the low bar. I was wondering if you would recommend learning it on the high bar first?

You want to maximize the shape change between the glide and the kip. If you over-pike, you'll tend to not fully extend your glide, and even if you do you've wasted energy extending from the pike, such that when you do contract you either won't be changing the length of your body as dramatically (because you were already piked) or you'll have to work against the direction you just pushed your legs (if you opened the pike to extend the glide). In either case, it'll be a less efficient kip. So, ideally, you maximize your length by being as close to the ground as possible. For very tall girls, this may require a pike if you can't raise the bar enough. But that's just not what you'd want to develop unless you absolutely have to.

I notice you don't teach a piked glide swing into the skill. Is there a particular reason for this? Why so hollow? A 90* pike is unique to lower bar kips, however it is somewhat expected and also the only option (other than straddled) for taller girls when our bars are a fixed setting.

I like your drills and especially the use of the box. Lots of good ideas to incorporate into strength. I only wish the majority of kids I taught were small and light enough to "stop and spot" like you did!

Excellent series. I love how you organized it, breaking down each component and showing the drills in progression. All of the basics were here, including several variations I've never seen. Thank you, I'm sure this will help a lot of coaches and gymnasts!

Okay now I know you are from Team Central since it said Tom and Troy at the end. This is Sara from Gold Medal.
