This week's gymnastics technique video features a simple drill that can be used to teach proper takeoff positioning for back tumbling and even in the yurchenko vault. Twin City Twisters Coaches Ben Tobler and Rich Stenger take their level 7 Minnesota state champions through this drill using a wedge mat stacked on top of a resi mat on the tumbling trampoline.

I tried this with my Level 7 team. We do not have a tumble track so I used a mini tramp and a spring board. I did lower the mats a little, but it worked fine. My kids were nervous, but they got better at it as they did it. It would definately be nicer with a tumble track. It was fun!
I am a gymnast. We do this drill almost everyday. I think its a little nerve-racking to jump down from a higher surface like we are. But I like to do it out of a round off backhand spring. Our coachs also do this type of thing for arabians. Sometimes they make us do a back tuck up to it.
