This drill isn't bad if you have them do it without the arch. I've done this drill where I lowered the foam block to chest level and told them to round their upper back. It still teaches the heel drive but doesn't introduce that dreaded arch.

Thank you all for the comments on "to arch or not to arch." Reading about both sides helps to explain the goals here and why the approaches are different.

I agree, Blair. I've taught it with the arch in the first step for years. It's the only way I've found to teach a proper heel drive to the beginners.

uh-oh, I know a lot of compulsory coaches who would hate to see that arch into a front-hip. I can hear it now.

Honestly, I still like to teach an arched front hip circle and refine it to a straight/hollow over time. If they don't drive the heels, they just pike and get no acceleration around the bar.

There is a difference between a drill and compulsory routine.

yeah, this is about the worst drill I've ever seen.

uhhh...what?! 3 years ago

Um I'm in level 5 right now and this is the complete oppisite of what I've been taught. You are not at all supposed to arch in to the front hip circle. That only teaches bad habits and leaves room for deductions. You are supposed to do a straight arm glide kip and go immediatly into a hollow body front hip circle. I'm no expert, but I know this is wrong and gymnasts, especially little ones like this who develop bad habits faster, should not be being taught to do this this way.

I have to agree with "Coach" and state even more so that this drill seems harmful to the future of these girls' gymnastics. The kip finishes in a pike, legs under/in front of the bar, shoulders by ears and over the bar. From there, it is not difficult to teach her to push straight (extending the shoulders away from her ears by pushing down on the bar) and lever straight through the fall in the front hip circle before piking/pushing around the bar. Putting this arch in it will just teach a "wrap" around the bar that is flingy instead of swingful and strong. It will also probably keep most of them on their stomach with bent arms. In other words, her legs will fly around the bar and help her peel off, just like Coach said would happen out of a kip too. And yes, the J.O. text specifically says not to arch into the FHC. I'm surprised Texas Dreams doesn't know this, or care about it.

I suppose maybe he thinks he's helping to train a future "straight" body cast handstand (which will actually be an arched body cast to handstand). At which point, I'd still say why bother wasting her time and helping to develop bad kipping habits. But, I don't work at Texas Dreams, so I must not know what I'm talking about. I welcome his explanation, if he reads this.

A front hip is supposed to show a straight/hallow shape throughout the skill. The point of the front him is to teach the gymnast how to finish the hip and lean on the bar. If you teach the front hip like this you are getting them used to finishing a kip on an arched and very high position. Anyways I am glad they are getting rid of this skill

The purpose of the front hip after the kip is to teach the lean...the problem is they are leaning too high up on their thighs to have it imitate the lean for a kip cast hs. Good drill... but I dont think the fornt hip is supposed to be arched????

Joanna Crook 3 years ago

They are getting rid of the front hip circle in the level 5 routine after this cycle, which isnt for a few years but atleast they are changing it!!! Level 5 will cast out of the kip, then cast squat on which will help so much with casting out of the high bar kip.

Really wish they would get rid of this skill. Spend so much time on it and it really does not go anywhere past level 5.
