I like this drill!

reminds of the seat drop to backhandspring drill on tumbl-trak to pop the hips open. this is something easy i can get the kids who aren't popping their hips open on BHS to understand.

thanks

If you actively squeeze your bottom, you'll open the hips as well because the gluteus maximus is your primary hip extensor muscle. I like this drill, but the bottom line is that your glute max must be "firing" if you want those hips to maximally open. She has an anteriorly rotated pelvis and needs to use her glute max to not only open her hips, but to also posteriorly (i.e. tuck under) rotate her pelvis to create full extension (i.e. opening) at the hips. More than likely, she has short, "overactive" hip flexors (psoas, in particular) and this is actually not allowing the glute max to fire because of a concept called "reciprocal inhibition" in which a muscle is "turned off" when its antagonist is "firing" (neural stimulation). The glute max and psoas major are antagonists of one another.
