One week from today, the 2010 US National Champions will be crowned at the Visa Championships in Hartford. Here's a look back at the US Champions from the 1990's decade of American gymnastics. We'll get to see many of these big names next week in Hartford whether it be coaching, commentating, or receiving their new bronze medals from the 2000 Olympic Games.

Flash Back Trivia:

How many of these gymnasts have skills named after them?

Who are the gymnasts that have skills named after them?

What are the skills and what events are they on?

Great video! Crazy though that for 10 years it was pretty much a battle between Blaine and John for the national title, execpt the random year where scott won, but all 3 went on to make an olympic team or two. The women however, all went on to make an olympic team, but the 1997 champs...hmm what happened there.

Nice video, but I wish you would have included Kim Zmeskal's vaults in 1992. She got a 10 on both of them.
I'm looking forward to seeing next week (assuming it will be US champions from 2000-2009).

Elizabeth, I wanted to let you know that you were correct. During workout today I looked in the code of points and the cast blind to healy (mixed grip) is called the miller. In the code there is a cast w/ full blind pirouette and the blind healy are in the same box. The full pirouette is named after some one else and I never saw Shannon name in the box until today. So thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Hop full on bars

Elizabeth the 1 1/4 skill which went to mixed grip never was named after shannon, her beam back handspring w/ 3/4 turn is called the miller. Her bar skill that is named after her is also called the Chusovitina. Maybe that will help. They both did the skill for the first time in 1991.

Shannon's skill is actually a 1 1/4 piro ending in L-grip on bars. The beam skill was never named after her.

did we do the 80s ones? Retton had the Retton flip on UB!

ApolytonGP 3 years ago

I lifted weights today and was tired. That's my excuse! Now let's get some forums!

Jason from Gymnastike 3 years ago

Roethlisberger had a dismount on P bars, no?

Elise Ray the Ray, toe on tkatchev...I am guessing here...because I heard this was competed some before Elise...no matter, great skill

Jason from Gymnastike 3 years ago

I will give you a hint about Shannon skill she actually shares this with another gymnast(Miller was the first in the US to compete it)

Can you name the gymnast she shares it with as well?

Flash Back Trivia: So far all the skills have been mentioned except for 1.
Shannon- Backspring 3/4 pirouette on beam
Dawes- Giant 1 1/2 pirouette on bars
Maloney- Toe on Shaposh on bars
Roethlisberger- Wende Back off on p-bars
BUT THERE IS ONE MORE FROM SHANNON DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THAT IS?

Jason from Gymnastike 3 years ago

Tracie you are correct but you missed one from Shannon! I terms of John at 4:53 it isnt a really a mess up he does cast up to handstand and pirouette and that was very common with the stutz handstands to 1 bar and the Diamidov 1 1/4's in the code of points. Blaine's steps are of course mistakes but it was the save and his face as you mentioned that I wanted to catch on video. Thank you for your comment.

I don't remember correctly but I think a 1 1/2 pirouetting giant on bars is called a "Dawes" after Dominique Dawes.. the full twisting backhandspring that Shannon Miller performs at 2:41 is named after her.. And I don't think it was shown on here but a toe on shaposhnikova on bars is called a "Maloney" after Kristen Maloney.

And at about 4:53, Roethlisberger kinda messes up on p-bars and another clip of Blaine Wilson taking a few steps outta his rings double double dismount. His reaction is kinda comical tho lol

I can answer the trivia for the mens side of things:

I know for sure Roethlisberger has a skill named after him, on parallel bars. It's in this video @2:19-2:21. If I am not mistaken, Chris Waller at one point had a skill named after him, on pommel horse I think, but has been removed from the Code.

LOVED the 90's :) Great addition to gymnastike with flashback friday! Thanks!

Jason from Gymnastike 3 years ago

Anonymous Coward I am not sure what clips you are talking about. They aren't messing up I just cut to differently parts of the routines otherwise this video would have been near 20minutes long.

why would you include clips of them messing up? If this is supposed to honor them it shouldn't show them messing up....
