In December of 1979 the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Because of that, President Jimmy Carter decided to boycott and pull all of our US athletes out of the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games. Yes, it is sad that it came to this, but boycotting an Olympics does serve a purpose. Olympic athletes are sports ambassodors for their countries. Having our athletes compete in the Olympics hosted by the Soviet Union would have supported the Soviet Union's economy. Were the athletes go, money will follow. (I know it is more complicated that just money, but that's an easy example)

As representatives of our nation, I'm sure the athletes could respect what was being done. (Life isn't always fair. The fact that these athletes went big anyway says volumes about their character.)

This is so sad. Boycotting an Olympics never serves any purpose but to punish innocent athletes. Find another way and another place to work out political situations.
