Uploaded by Jason from Gymnastike | September 17, 2010
This weeks Flash Back Friday looks at some our sports greatest female gymnasts. These gymnasts are considered to be the 10 greatest female gymnasts in history based on the following criteria:
1) Gymnast must have won at least one all around World or Olympic Title
2) Must have a least 2 World or Olympic titles on any apparatus.
3) Gymnastike requirement- at least 5 years removed from competition
Who is the Greatest Female Gymnast in history ?
Yes the answer to #5 is Boginskaya used grips in competition for the 1st time in 1996.
Glad so see Boguinskaia on the "podium". :) Sad to see Korbut, Silivas and Omelianchik out. I agree: we need a "greatest ever gymnasts never to have won an all-around world/olympic title" Flashback Friday. :)My guesses: 1 - Nellie Kim2 - Lilia Podkopayeva and Ludmilla Ludmilla Tourischeva3 - Larisa Latynina and Vera Cáslavská4 - I think she has 8: 2 vaults, 3 on the UB, 2 on beam and 1 on floor5 - I'm not sure I get the question. Let's say... Grips? :pThanks for posting this! :)
Jemma thank you for commenting. While I do agree with your comment about many of these gymnasts had to compete with a larger amount of contenders each AA competition that doesn't take away from what Nastia did in her career. She meets every requirement except for the 3rd being done for over 5 years. She deserves all that she has achieved and that shouldnt be underscored because there wasn't as much depth. However I will also agree that back in the days of Boggi,Shousanova, Miller no one single event could give you an upper hand on your competition but that isn't Nastia fault (great talent on bars) its the code and change in rules that has made that possible.
Guest- I will have to agree that at times she didnt show the best sportsmanship. However sportsmanship would be put under the category of greatest athlete or sportsperson. This was a video of the greatest gymnasts which is gymnastics success and with that criteria Khorkina is one of the best. Thanks for the comment
Marco- Kim does meet the criteria with a world AA title and 2 world event wins Floor, beam in 1992 and was a fantastic gymnast with her heart in the right place which you will see in the 4th and last raw ambition video. However the resumes of the athletes on this have a few more titles or AA wins than she does. She is one of America's best gymnasts ever and helped to make USA Gymnastics the world power it is today.
emily you are correct Nellie was the first to score a perfect 10 in the Olympics on Vault and Floor
Khorkina has won 3 world AA Titles, won 5 world bar titles, 2 olympic bar titles, world vault title, competed in 3 olympic games and has numerous skills named after her. She had to be creative to be competitive and she was very competitive. I think there is more to her career than just longevity. She is not my favorite gymnast on this list but I think her credentials speak for themselves.
