This week's Flash Back Friday is the first of a series in which we will look back to the days of Olympic compulsory routines. This video shows compulsory vault and uneven bars/ high bar from 1976-1996. The 1996 Atlanta Olympics was the last time gymnasts competed in compulsories on the international level (we do have elite compulsory type routines in our TOPS/Elite testing). How many of these routines do you remember?

Flash Back Trivia:
Which USA Olympian competed in 3 different compulsory cycles?
Can you name 3 significant moments in USA Olympic History that took place during the compulsory portion of the competition?

Sorry the 1st question should have said olympians competed in 3 cycles? Bart Connor is correct by there is one more.

Bart Conner competed three cycles.

1. Shannon 1st place after Compulsories at 1992 games

2. Rhonda Faehn on Podium at 88 games

3. Kerri Strug nailing floor and the U.S. Passing the Romanians at 96 games.

Three Significant Moments in USA Olympic History :)

1 - Kim Zmeskal's fall off beam in 1992
2- Kelly Garrison's UB in 1988 - Rhonda Faehn apparently stayed on the podium after Kelly mounted the UB and watched her UB routine, leading to a deduction that may have caused the US a medal that year
3 - Shannon Miller's flawless performance in 1992 - Her 39.636 in compulsories combined with her 39.675 in the optionals led to an individual 1st place finish after the team final.....Had the rules of the previous olympic cycles been in place, Shannon would have won the all-around in 1992 (combining prelim and all-around final totals). Hey, her all-around silver was just as great :)

I dont know the whole trivia answer, but I think i remember that Kim zmeskal fell during her compulsory beam routine in 92. Could that be one of them?

I really wish they would bring back the compulsories! I think that it really seperated the good gymnasts from the great ones.

Love the men's high bar dismount from 1996! Their vault then doesn't look as difficult as some of the others?
