USA Gymnastics women's National Team Coordinator, Martha Karolyi is set to retire after the 2012 Olympics. Mary Lee Tracy of Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy has consistently produced National team gymnasts and coached gymnasts onto Olympic teams as early as 1996 (Amanda Borden and Jaycie Phelps who helped team USA win the gold medal). We asked her if she would ever be interested in succeeding Martha Karolyi.

Thank you for your opinions, I haven't been following gymnastics for very long, and it helped to have my ideas viewed from a different perspective. Team U.S.A. has to choose their next steps wisely becuase they cannot function as a team without Marta or other leadership in place. They need to find someone who can effectivly communicate with the athletes, make 'life or death' decisions about the team, have good knowledge of the sport, and many other qualities you would expect from upper managment. I wish the selectors good luck, these people are hard to find, and the new national team coordinator luck as well. So much goes behind the scenes that we don't see, and as a result these people can be taken for granted.

Please, no more Russians at USA-G. It's bad enough there's a conflict of interest on the Valeri Liukin appointment of elite athlete development coordinator and his daughter Nastia as the athlete rep. All national coaches should unite and protest some of these appointments. I'm fine with Mary Lee Tracy or anyone besides another Russian on USA-G committee. If Valeri is elite developement coordinator, then NO gymnast from WOGA should be on the national or Olympic team for at least 8 years. I think Alexander Alexandrov also has links in Texas and WOGA.
...pp...
Russian Alexander Alexandrov and Russian Nellie Kim (president of FIG Technical Committee) are two of the biggest cheater in gymnastics.
1988 Seoul Olympics, Nellie Kim (Soviet judge at the time) was responsible for helping fellow Soviet Shushunova win the AA Gold title.
from wikipedia:
"The all-around duel between Daniela Silivas and Yelena Shushunova is widely acknowledged to have been one of the finest contests in the history of the sport, not to mention most hotly debated. In particular, Silivas' score on vault came under scrutiny. Of the six judges on the panel, three marked her first vault as a perfect 10.0; two others gave her 9.9s. The Soviet judge on the panel Nellie Kim, however, only scored Silivas at a 9.8."
1992 Barcelona Olympics, Rozalia Galiyeva qualified for the individual AA, Tatiana Gutsu did not.
Galiyeva competed with the Unified Team at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. She exceeded expectations in the preliminary competition, finishing 8th and qualifying for the individual all-around final behind teammates Svetlana Boguinskaya and Tatiana Lysenko.
However, before the all-around, coach Alexander Alexandrov pulled Galiyeva from the competition, citing a knee injury. Her replacement was teammate Tatiana Gutsu. Although Gutsu had fallen from the balance beam in the team finals, she was renowned for her extreme difficulty and the reigning European all-around champion and a Worlds medalist on beam, vault and bars. It was later revealed that Galiyeva's injury was nonexistent, and that the substitution was made because Gutsu was considered to have better medal-winning potential. Indeed, Gutsu emerged from the Olympic all-around as the gold medalist. While Gutsu split her prize money with Galiyeva, Galiyeva always remained angry about this turn of events.
This fake injury move is now considered "pulling a Gutsu." During the 2012 London Olympics, some suggested that the USA should "pull a Gutsu" and insert Jordyn Wieber in the individual AA. Pulling a Gutsu may be okay in other countries, but in the U.S. you know lawsuit a coming.

Are you talking about the all-around? Could you/someome please explain what happenned (I havent followed gymnastics that long, and I am no expert)? Although I DO konow that Gutsu won the AA gold by 0.012 of a point. Is that what youre reffering to, because although I wasn't there, It seems fair to say that Gutsu won, not Miller. I don't see the contreversy.

Do you think that even with that Alexander could still be a contender?

Anonymous Coward 5 months ago

I would think the bad press would come from what he did in the 1992 Olympics that landed Shannon Miller silver instead of gold.

Would there be a chance that Alexander Alexandrov could take the spot?I know it's probably very unlikely, but he was fired as the russian team coach, and his contract with Mustafina is about to run out. Besides, didn't he coach Dominique Moceanu for awhile in the U.S. ? I don't know the details on how he moved from u.s to russia etc. to coach, but if he did it once, could he do it again? Although, even if he could somehow fulfil the position, there would probably be some bad press on the US team, taking in a coach that was fired from the Russians. Also, Mustafina wants to continue onto the next quad, and she'll probably want to renew her contract with him.

Does anyone else have any thoughts?

My vote would be for Kelli Hill. She seems fair and level headed and like she would really fight for what is best for the athlete. She seems like the perfect person for this role...

Megan 2 years ago

Brian, why wouldn't you want Steve Rybacki? Curious.

M 2 years ago

I also think it should be Yvgeny

Brian 2 years ago

No offense to Steve Rybacki, but I really hope it's not him.

apparently nastia is already on the world selection team not having officially retiring. im guessing valeri will take this job, unfort. what about yvgeny? its really ashame as valeri seems to have alot more coaching in him and the ntc should be neutral not having any personal athletes imo. after watching the british gym doentary its amazing to really see the emotion that has to be removed from the ntc type role. marta seems to play it so well. kelli hill seems prime for this but she may be too nice! maybe peggy lid should come back to the us! love the suzanne yoculan suggestion. who else is there? how amazing would that be!

alex 2 years ago

It won't be someone from the NCAAs. It will be someone from the USAG Elite program...my money is on Valeri. He has Caitlyn for 2016, but if she stays healthy she'll be on that team regardless...so I bet he could do both.

Suzanne Yoculan has the right passion, determination an fire. She sure knows how to pull each athlete's strengths together to form a consistantly winning team. :) Would LOVE to see her considered for this position.

it would suck to see valeri take on this position, for him to stop coaching would be such a waste... he is so brilliant
i really think it would be someone with the expertise but who is older, or closer to ebing done coaching.. like a Kelli hill..

i wonder if they already know who it is going to be and just wont announce it until after the olympics.. i would think that if someone in a position as important as matha's they would have found a replacement before annoucing her retirement??

Besides expertise and experience, it would be most beneficial for the next NTC to have the ability to keep a good perspective and level head, as well as an excellent track record of pacing athletes and paying great attention to injury prevention. AKA Kelli Hill! That would require a ton of traveling for her, though. Valeri would be excellent too, if he was willing to stop coaching (which would be a bummer).

I heard it may be Valerie

I think Kim Zmeskal would be great, but I know she has her own gym and gymnasts. : (

Cam 2 years ago

I agree with Parse. It most definitely should NOT be anyone with athletes in the system. I would create an intense conflict of interest. Valeri, I think, would be a great person for the position, but he has athletes in the system right now (Grace McLaughlin, Katelyn Ohashi, etc.). Kim Zmeskal would also be good.

Someone mentioned Kelli Hill, as well. She would be fantastic as well. She no longer has athletes competing at the elite level (Kytra Hunter has moved on to compete for Florida), so she could be a contender for the spot.
I am interested in seeing what comes of this... It could be very interesting. :)

It's, "Thank you Marta, coaches, National Staff, GOODBYE. This is from my daughter who was an elite and can recite this in her sleep.

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

would someone please tell Dominique Moceanu to watch this. She always has alot to say about Marta and those training camps.

Parse 2 years ago

"Thank you Marta, coaches, National Staff, & ???? " I can't make out the last bit.

what? 2 years ago

What was that the girls say at the very end of the vid? Thank you marta, something something?

Parse 2 years ago

I don't think it can be anyone with athletes in the system... that's part of what seems so tough to me. Does Kelli Hill still have elites? Should Susanne Yoculan be considered? Could they pull from NCAA - would that even make sense? Would someone be willing to retire from coaching to take the job?

It's hard to imagine what would cause more upheaval than the change of the NTC.

I think it will be Valeri
