Even without team veteran Alicia Sacramone who suffered a torn achilles in training just 2 days ago, the Team USA girls put on a show in today's World Championships qualification round. The team was made up of just five all around gymnasts: Alexandra Raisman, Jordyn Wieber, Gabrielle Douglas, and McKayla Maroney. The only gymnast who had been to a World Championships is Raisman. Anna Li remained the alternate. The team hit every routine and each girl finished in the top 12 in the all around standings with Wieber in 2nd place. The American girls qualified into the team finals in 1st place ahead of Russia, the defending World Champions and China, the defending Olympic Champions. USA also advanced at least one gymnast into event finals on every apparatus.

USA National team coordinator Martha Karolyi talks about the young team's performance today, the status of Alicia Sacramone, and her faith in Gabrielle Douglas, who finished 5th all around in the World today but will not advance to all around finals due to the 2 gymnasts per country rule.

Is that for Alicia? You think she will come back after this injury?

I really liked what Marta said about not considering bringing in Shawn. After Alicia got hurt, many observers were demanding Shawn should have been flowin in immediately to save the wreck that was the team. But, Marta was confident in the preparation of the healthy girls and stayed the course. That gives a powertful message to the athletes, saying we trust that you can execute and win even without Alicia. That's coaching.

What are some of these strange questions Anne asks? Like, do you feel more pressure since all eyes are on you, she asked that to several athletes. Why ask that, that's putting the pressure on when you actually ask that question. And then something in this interview about, do you think they can win, or something. Can't ever hear her anyway, so.

QUESTION? 2 years ago

Okay, so the format for these worlds, as well as previous worlds/olympics is:
Qualifying: 6-5-4 (6 on team, 5 up, 4 scores count)
Finals: 6-3-3 (6 on team, 3 up, 3 scores count)

So in London 2012, what will the format be?
5 on the team.
Qualifying is it going to be 5-5-4, because then all gymnasts would compete.
Maybe 5-4-3, so only 3 scores count now?
And obviously finals would be 5-3-3, but I'm just unsure about qualy.

girlfriend deserves a shout out for her excellent fx and overall performance :)

i love that they're starting to show more emotion - marta when asked about bars and gabby, and gabby when she talked about her own bars routine.

I don't understand why people say we are so weak on bars. we had 2 girls score in the top 8 and we didn't even use our best bar worker on the team, anna li. Just because we're not 'the best' doesn't mean we're not good. I honestly don't really see a weak event for this team at all.

people keep talking about bringing Shawn in.. but Alicia was injured 2 days ago right??
so she would have to fly out (a what 12 hour flight) and get to Tokyo the day before the competition???
I don't see how that would have worked?

Important to note that as much as people complain about verification and camps that Martha's reasoning for them paid off. Clearly used Douglas as an example. Fans were writing her off because of Visa's, but simulating pressure situations seemed to fix her issues. Most gym fans would never let her touch the beam again. Instead of keeping that mentality the selection process has strengthened her. Kudos to the system.

She should write a book i would read it cover to cover

she's not the devil ggmb makes her out to be. They just like to have a witch hunt mentality there. Everyone that actually works with Martha has a lot of good things to say. She has the teams best interest in mind and she is a hard worker. I give her all of the credit for the success USA has had since 2001.

Funny how she almost seemed surprised when asked about getting Shawn to Tokyo. Interesting....
However, all the best to Alicia - we really hope to see her in London 2012! She's a fighter, let's hope she makes it to the top once again.

Wow this time I actually understood every word she said. I think Martha answered all the questions well.
