USA National Team Coordinator Martha Karolyi had announced her plans to retire after the 2012 Olympics, though that may not be the case any longer. Karolyi talks about her plans at the conclusion of the 2011 World Gymnastics Championships in Tokyo.

Replacing Marta with a gym owner or coach who has not retired is like letting a parent be a judge at their daughter's meet. Bias is inevitable.

But Nastia is neither a gym owner nor a coach, so she is not likely to be as predisposed as someone who is, like her dad.

Nastia Liukin lol? How in the world is she unbiased? I still think it's a little shady that Nastia was on the selection committee for this world championship team when she must have known she was coming back. how could she possibly have made those decisions objectively knowing that these girls will be her competition next summer? I think Kelli Hill would be a great replacement.

Which is better: cram for a final exam the night before, or study judiciously for months?

Waiting until the last moment to slap a team together is like cramming for a final exam. So far it has met with a reasonable amount of success, because the best athletes are being drawn from the largest talent pool in the world. But unbridled competition (the current Code of Points) is changing that. Point-whoring is taking the best athletes out of the race before it has even begun; and for those who have managed to hobble into the Ranch, last minute selection camps are unlikely to mitigate injury. Without changes to its team building tactics, America is likely to be at parity with the rest of the world in Rio.

Kelli Hill would be a good replacement for Matha, she is no longer training elites, but I'm not sure she would want the job

Only two people I can even imagine taking over this role....John Geddart or Kim Zmeskal. They have shown that they are capable and level headed enough to take that Job when Marta retires....

Obviously, nominating an active gym owner or coach would be a blatant conflict of interest. This leaves USA Gymnastics with the daunting task of finding someone who is less biased, someone with extensive knowledge of how national teams are coordinated from an athletic AND administrative perspective. The criteria dwindles a laundry list of potential candidates down to one, in my opinion. Her name: Nastia Liukin.

Can't argue that her method took a group of gymnasts that the majority couldn't stay on the equipment at Visas and turned them into a consistent confidant group. The men who were more experienced and knew they were on the team for a long period were inconsistent and buckled under pressure at moments.

Marta is so being strong holded by USA Gym to announce the team after trials vs her preferred 2 days prior to departure! The thought of finding out if you made the olympics 2 days prior to departing is just amazing to me. I really dont know how these girls mentally do it.
