American gymnast Gabrielle Douglas had a bit of a coming out party today in Madison Square Garden at the 2012 AT&T American Cup. Despite being the meet's "alternate" and competing exhibition routines which did not count towards the meet's final tallies, Douglas posted the highest all around score of the day, 61.299. Her scores were: 15.866 on vault for a new Amanar, 15.633 on the uneven bars, 15.100 on the beam and 14.700 on the floor.

She stopped using 'like'! :)

I'm not really sure what your point is. I believe what I'm saying is that she is a contender. Now if that makes you upset then that's something you must deal with. Let's just all recognize that Gabby did great and move forward. You act as if I said she already deserved the all-around spot. Which if you read my first post, is not at all what I said. I believe I said (again) that she was a contender along with Bross, Raisman, and Wieber. I was simply saying those girls are going to have to step it up! JEZZ!

I think Gabby did what she needed to do and that's what matters most! She needed to send Marta out of all people there a message and she did! I think what I love about Gabby is her potential. There are so many athletes with potential but Gabby has the body to really just be a phenominal gymnast. She has such nice lines and toes, yet packs ton and energy and power. Havent we as fans been complaining that the US rarely has the full package gymnast. You either get power OR grace? I really feel if Chow can continue to pace her correctly and polish and perfect those upgrades she can be right up there with the Komova's of the world. Rooting for you Gabby and the success of team USA!!

yes the Olympic Qualifications determine the Olympic All-Around finalists. Not the American Cup, Classics, Visas, or any other meet.

Hmm... 1 year ago

@Anonymous Coward,
I believe they actually do! The prelims of the competitions dictates who goes in the all-around and event finals! So one meet can determine Olympic All-Around finalists, just ask John Orozco!

I just love Gabby! Her bars look effortless. I would love for her to make it and win the AA in London!

im just pumped for team USA...this meet just helps show that our country is going to put up an amazing fight for gold and that as a country we are top contenders and have some serious talent out there :) great job to all the girls...pumped for LONDON!!!! go team USA :) you are incredible-every one of you!

You can't determine the Olympic All-Around finalists from one meet..

Gabby just proved that Aly and Jordyn can't rest on their previous history to make it to the Olympic all-around. It's going to be a battle, and with Bross back it's going to be epic! Her floor routine yesterday reminded me of a young Dominique Dawes (pre-92), the height of the tumbling and the energy.

I must say I had said it would be an uphill battle for Gabby but she showed this weekend she's more than ready for the climb.

by the way, this was definitely not the performance of her life. Lots of little wobbles on beam & lots of landing deductions & a rookie mistake on floor. Like the rest of them this wasn't her at her full potential at all & I guess we'll really see as the year progresses.

Anonymous Coward 1 year ago

she's just awesome. hands down. loooooved the interview, love the girl.

I don't know if the two situations were all that different. Even though her scores didn't count she knew everyone was going to be watching to see where she ended up. It was the same judges, same crowd, & same competition field to be compared against. I think the fact of the matter is she showed that she is capable of being number 1, which is of course going to be a massive confidence boost for her. For that matter, Aly Raisman also showed that by finishing within two tenths of Jordyn- this year is going to be very interesting. If Aly can clean up her bars & make the obvious improvements that she needs to make elsewhere, it could be any of them on any given day that ends up on top. It's exciting to be in a year where there's more than just two people who can legitimately contend for that top spot, with the three Americans & two Russians who can all score in that range, plus whoever else is upping their performance level to get to that capability, it's going to be a very interesting year!

Anonymous Coward 1 year ago

i'm not denying Gabby performed the best, because she did, but you can't compare the two situations, and to add to that, I'm not saying that if Gabby was in the meet she would have fell apart, maybe she would have even done better! But we won't know

Anonymous Coward 1 year ago

she did have the best meet yesterday and performed better than everyone by far, but the bottom line is she didn't win..

Someone has been helping her not to say "like" every other word! Phew.

Preach, MRG. two snaps!

She's gained so much poise in the last year and her gymnastics is so lovely - both dynamic and elegant. SHe had a great meet today and I think she's going to have a great year.

Gabby got the highest score!!! Period! All of them had pressure, the same audience, the same judges. If you want to play up your favorites, fine! However, recognize the skills, acknowledge the fact she has the highest score....

MRG 1 year ago

It's not about whether Gabby "should" have won. She got the highest score and Jordyn knows it, Geddert knows it, Raisman knows it, Mihai knows it, and Gabby and Chow know it.

Also, trying to pretend that Gabby wasn't under pressure when she was the one with everything to lose AND to prove is ridiculous. This meet was way more important for her than Jordyn since if Jordyn bombed ScAM while trying out new upgrades early in the season, it's not as if it would have had any impact on her Olympic chances. Whereas Gabby has been trying to prove since Nats 2011 that she's not a headcase. If she'd messed up, even after doing well at Worlds, Martha would have definitely thought she didn't have it mentally to contend and Gabby certainly knows that.
And that was NOT the meet of Gabby's life. I would argue that she had a much better meet during prelims at Worlds. She was wobbly on beam here and she had two easily avoidable OOBs on floor and attendant errors. And she had major upgrades as well.
Gabby was the best gymnast in the arena on the day and she clearly has the goods to be the best gymnast again. Get over it.

Can I have one too?

Anonymous Coward 1 year ago

Gabby did do amazing! but its not right for everyone to hate on Jordyn and say that Gabby should have one, you can't compare the two situations. Gabby had an amazing day, and Jordyn won the American Cup.

M 1 year ago

Stop hating! Everyone else is amazed at how Gabby did, so stfu and stop hating okay

Anonymous Coward 1 year ago

so people really need to stop saying Gabby should have won, she was in a completely different situation and had nothing to lose and everything to prove. To be honest if she didn't hit that could have been detrimental to her olympic case, so yes she did awesome, but you can't say she should have one, if she was officially in the competition you have no idea how differently the results might have turned out for her

Anonymous Coward 1 year ago

She definitely did amazing, but she really had no pressure to knock it out of the park. With being the reigning world champion Jordan had all of that pressure having it be her first meet back, plus the fact the media kept brining up the comparison of winners of the American Cup becoming Olympic Champions. Jordan had a solid competition and was testing out some big new upgrades, and even with some big errors was still able to win the official competition and only fell a little over two tenths behind gabby, who had the meet of her life so far. As Wieber keeps training and her upgrades get more consistent, I have a feeling so much bigger scores will be seen (on top of the already huge scores we saw). But amazing meet for Gabby, she made a huge statement and case for herself today.

She looked fantastic, and gave an exciting performance! On another note, she has become so much more well-spoken since worlds. Go Gabby!
