College sports is the true Olympics today, looking to the ideals that the beginning of modern Olympics were founded on - and the Official Olympics are competing with Super Bowl today... Not very successfully it appears...
I on my part think the Olympics have grown into ... ... well, one get tired (exhausted even) of the magnitude of it all! Soon we need Marshians to fly into the arenas to satisfy our expectations... Beijing was almost too exceptional and overwhelming. Only a few number of countries, super powers really, can ever afford to host Olympic Games with these demands of the public (if they are the demands of the public). Cant help it, but one is beginning to think there was something beautiful with the "simplicity" of former days Olympics.
Watching these Olympics, and gymnastics too, made me aware, I think for the first time, the huge differences under which athletes live with their sports. The "around the sport" is so different between countries and continents!

This video though, like it! Thanks for all the work you did in London Gymnastike! I loved to follow your twitter, particularly, and pressreleases and quotes, quick, as you always are to keep followers updated! Thanks! It gave the Olympics that little extra fun to watch! Our "pub" (public place on the web) during these Games, one could always expect a gathering here! A lot of very interesting comments and a mere, inevitable, one or two "sporthuligans" comments perhaps... Great job, London 2012, Gymnastike!

Wow. The closing ceremony sounds like a Super Bowl halftime show.

Ok, if anyone thinks the opening ceremony is bad they haven't seen the closing ceremony, which I just watched. Basically, it was a rock concert packed full of celebs, but what really got me was when they hauled out ginormous screens with pictures of women portrayed as sex objects with cameras zoomed in on the male athletes gawking at them. And a number of other women were running around scantily clad throughout as well. And I'm thinking, "Women just made history in this Olympics winning a record number of medals by being strong, powerful, athletic women and the artistic director of the closing ceremonies, a man named Kim Gavin, can't come up with any better way to use women in his presentation." They should have let Danny Boyle do the closing ceremonies too.

I liked it until about the 1950s segment and then had to hit mute because I thought it got kind of silly with all the dancing and obnoxious music. Maybe Anonymous coward didn't learn anything new because the parts of Britain's history they showed are pretty similar to our own, assuming s/he is from the States (agrarian economy, industrial revolution, two world wars, fairly similar 20th century). But I agree with bb that no country will ever top Beijing and Danny Boyle even said he wasn't even going to try to match Beijing.

I respect your opinion, of course, but the ceremony has in fact been hailed a great success in most countries. There were parts I didn't like, but overall they had to go for a different approach to Beijing because it was impossible to have anything more spectacular than that. So this ceremony was more thoughtful, meaningful and downright eccentric. It's strange that you felt you didn't anything about British history because it was packed with historical references.

Not regarding this video,

but the 2012 London Opening Ceremony was the worst I've ever seen.....and I've seen a lot since the 1970/80s. Big mistake of hiring Danny Boyle. The ceremony was a mess and I didn't learn anything about England's history. It's a shame because the Brits have a rich history besides music. Saturday Night Live comedy skits should NEVER be included in an open ceremony, period. What a joke and an embarrassment for the British people.
The trophy was retired in Beijing 2008 as I doubt there will ever be another opening ceremony like that again.
