Shawn Johnson will close out her illustrious gymnastics career, officially announcing her retirement from the sport on Sunday due to her lingering knee injury. In a conference call with the media, Johnson discusses her retirement and what lies ahead.

Johnson was on the roster to compete at this week's Visa Championships in St Louis in an attempt to make a bid at her second Olympic team. That attempt is now over. Johnson is one of the most popular U.S. gymnasts of all time. Shawn Johnson will leave competitive gymnastics as one of the most popular and successful US gymnasts. Her career includes three world championship gold medals and four Olympic medals (one gold and three silver).

why isn't Shawn doing the tour like her other 2008 teammates?

I think that this was the best decision for Shawn. Her knee injury just could not sustain the pressures of gymnastics. She had a great gymnastics career and had many great achievements that will go along with her through the rest of her life. That is messed up if they really told her to retire, but Shawn had the ultimate decision and knew what was best for herself. Shawn and her coaches obviously discussed this and knew what was best for her. Good luck Shawn in whatever you decide to do with your life after gymnastics!

@ Anonymous Coward, Why would he tell all the older ones to retire?? I just don't get it! Either she was really not improving and having issues with her knee or she really was healthy and about to blow the crowd away! WTF??? If USA Gymnastics is doing that then that is really really F-up! I think fans should start boycotting! Im already P-oed that this happened to Chellsie and Shawn! WTF??

ALSO, I DO REMEMBER SHAWN TWEETING SAYING SHE "HAD A TERRIBLE DAY" MAYBE THAT WAS IT! AND THE WHOLE THING ABOUT HER SAYING SHE VERY WELL MAY NOT BE ON THE TEAM. SAD :-(

PUBLICITY STUNT

I think this is bull... They all should have a chance. This sport is so intense and takes such a toll on the body who know who'll be peaking right in time and who will be burning out right. Why not have as many to choose from until the last second rather than counting Shawn and Chellsie out before they proved out. Ridiculous.

What about Sloan, any news on what her gymnastics is like????

Anonymous Coward 12 months ago

c'mon all, Shawn knows she wasnt going to stand a chance. Chellsie didn't have one either. Nastia has a slim chance if she can hit her Beam and Bars with consistancy in training & comp. She will be lucky to make Alt.
They already know who they want
Wieber, Raisman,Douglas, Ross, and Maroney. Alt between Liukin, Bross,
Vault- Maroney, Wieber, Raisman or Douglas
Bars- Douglas, Ross, Wieber
Beam- Weiber, Raisman, Douglas
Floor- Raisman, Weiber, Douglas or Ross
Now if we don't want a Vault Finalist and want that team gold I would say switch out Maroney for Bross. That way you have 3 strong Bars and still have 3 Amanars. Douglas would end up vaulting. I just hope Bross becomes more consistant. If Nastia can prove consistancy and put up good beam and bar scores, I would have her over Bross. Bross and that beam dismount kills her.

Asac is the next one they are going after. They don't dare ask Nastia!!!!!!

jessica 12 months ago

wow, that's messed up!!!!

Things aren't so quiet in the Indy office, but he offered the same to chellsie. If you want certain things to not be heard, then speak what you say behind closed doors. Please understand why I must remain anonymous. I think chels should be allowed to compete, specially after what I overheard.

First off, congratulations to Shawn on a wonderful career and the start of her new life! She is the kind of person who will continue to make a positive impact on the sport and in other areas as well. As to those who take EVERY opportunity on this message board to bash Nastia Liukin,. you really just make yourselves look bad. If you don't care for an athlete, that's fine, but do you have to make such nasty comments about a person you don't even know? Grow up, please.

How do you know Steve Penny asked her to "just retire" ?

Anonymous Coward 12 months ago

Steve Penny called and asked her to "Just Retire" They are going to make it look good for her.

Shawnnnnnnnn :P 12 months ago

She knew she would be making this decission a LONG TIME AGO. Really irritating that she waited this long ot say she was going to retire, but hey more publicity for her.

I love Shawn and there's no reason she should have to feel sorry for retiring. She has already given her fans so much and as huge fan myself I can say that I truly respect her decision to think of the long-term effects of gymnastics on her body and respect her body enough to retire. We love you, Shawn!

In our local gym, when one of the team girls decides to leave gymnastics, it is an emotional timestopping experience for everyone in the gym. Now multiply that 100-fold for an elite gymnast who poured her heart, time, mind and body into the sport, and spent much of her childhood as part of this small family of intensely committed girls and coaches. It is a huge moment for Shawn (and all the others before her) to say goodbye. Even with all the great things Shawn has to look forward to, it is not overly dramatic to acknowledge how difficult it must be to retire from gymnastics competition.

Mo Mo 12 months ago

Yea, it has nothing to do with being "dead" Im talking about the fact that we will never see her doing super awesome ballzzie gymnastics ever again, and that is what makes me sad :-( Gymnastics won't be same

Nicole L 12 months ago

Contrary to previous comments, I like the background music. I think it made me have a bit more sympathy towards Shawn and made the scratchy press call noise more bearable.

GymFan 12 months ago

Why couldn't have been Liukin retiring instead?!? I'm soooo sick of her 'destiny business' and how 1 beam routine magically makes her back in the running for everything-ONE routine whereas Memmel was forced out after doing ONE beam routine. Make the madness stop!

Anonymous Coward 12 months ago

So She is done with competing. Now that Nastia is competing, do you think they will ask Shawn to do what Nastia did?

do what? 12 months ago

So, the title says bye to gymnastics...so no professional appearances as well?
Plus this vid feels like to me she passed on. Sad and strange.

Anonymous Coward 12 months ago

Yea I agree. The dramatic haunting background music is a bit over the top. It's not an obituary, it's a retirement.

This video felt a little creepy. The gal finally publically confessed she's done, she didn't die. The editing was odd.

Jeany 12 months ago

Love Shawn, she will do great things, but where is the nice retirement video for Chellsie Memmel

Head in The bed 12 months ago

If Shawn can't win with a "who farted" look on her face that's her thing.

sally 12 months ago

Ditto-so sad, she is the most fun gymnast to watch, period. Her passion and joy while performing is
fun and her talent amazing. She will be irreplaceable, so many boring girls out there. We will miss you!

Anonymous Coward 12 months ago

It is sad, but for God's sakes, she is not dead or anything, she is a very young woman who has so much to look forward to, good luck to her.
