Shawn Johnson will close out her illustrious gymnastics career, officially announcing her retirement from the sport on Sunday due to her lingering knee injury. In a conference call with the media, Johnson discusses her retirement and what lies ahead.
Johnson was on the roster to compete at this week's Visa Championships in St Louis in an attempt to make a bid at her second Olympic team. That attempt is now over. Johnson is one of the most popular U.S. gymnasts of all time. Shawn Johnson will leave competitive gymnastics as one of the most popular and successful US gymnasts. Her career includes three world championship gold medals and four Olympic medals (one gold and three silver).

I think that this was the best decision for Shawn. Her knee injury just could not sustain the pressures of gymnastics. She had a great gymnastics career and had many great achievements that will go along with her through the rest of her life. That is messed up if they really told her to retire, but Shawn had the ultimate decision and knew what was best for herself. Shawn and her coaches obviously discussed this and knew what was best for her. Good luck Shawn in whatever you decide to do with your life after gymnastics! |

@ Anonymous Coward, Why would he tell all the older ones to retire?? I just don't get it! Either she was really not improving and having issues with her knee or she really was healthy and about to blow the crowd away! WTF??? If USA Gymnastics is doing that then that is really really F-up! I think fans should start boycotting! Im already P-oed that this happened to Chellsie and Shawn! WTF?? |

I think this is bull... They all should have a chance. This sport is so intense and takes such a toll on the body who know who'll be peaking right in time and who will be burning out right. Why not have as many to choose from until the last second rather than counting Shawn and Chellsie out before they proved out. Ridiculous. |

c'mon all, Shawn knows she wasnt going to stand a chance. Chellsie didn't have one either. Nastia has a slim chance if she can hit her Beam and Bars with consistancy in training & comp. She will be lucky to make Alt. |

Things aren't so quiet in the Indy office, but he offered the same to chellsie. If you want certain things to not be heard, then speak what you say behind closed doors. Please understand why I must remain anonymous. I think chels should be allowed to compete, specially after what I overheard. |

First off, congratulations to Shawn on a wonderful career and the start of her new life! She is the kind of person who will continue to make a positive impact on the sport and in other areas as well. As to those who take EVERY opportunity on this message board to bash Nastia Liukin,. you really just make yourselves look bad. If you don't care for an athlete, that's fine, but do you have to make such nasty comments about a person you don't even know? Grow up, please. |

I love Shawn and there's no reason she should have to feel sorry for retiring. She has already given her fans so much and as huge fan myself I can say that I truly respect her decision to think of the long-term effects of gymnastics on her body and respect her body enough to retire. We love you, Shawn! |

In our local gym, when one of the team girls decides to leave gymnastics, it is an emotional timestopping experience for everyone in the gym. Now multiply that 100-fold for an elite gymnast who poured her heart, time, mind and body into the sport, and spent much of her childhood as part of this small family of intensely committed girls and coaches. It is a huge moment for Shawn (and all the others before her) to say goodbye. Even with all the great things Shawn has to look forward to, it is not overly dramatic to acknowledge how difficult it must be to retire from gymnastics competition. |

Contrary to previous comments, I like the background music. I think it made me have a bit more sympathy towards Shawn and made the scratchy press call noise more bearable. |

If Shawn can't win with a "who farted" look on her face that's her thing. |
