At the 2012 Visa Championships, C.J. placed fourth on still rings and advanced to the Olympic Trials. Earlier that year at the Winter Cup, C.J. placed second on rings and at the NCAA Championships, he took gold on rings. He also helped his team, the Illini, to the NCAA team title and tied for second all-around.

CJ was named the still rings champion at the 2011 Winter Cup. Also, he was a member of the 2011 US Men's Pan American Team that traveled to Guadalajara, Mexico and placed 3rd in the team final.
