Nastia has enjoyed a long and successful career, beginning in 2002 at the U.S. Championships where she finished 5th in the junior division on beam and floor exercise. Liukin's career as a junior took off even more in 2003 and 2004, where she won back-to-back all around titles at the U.S. Championships as well as winning bars, beam and floor both years.

Her senior debut came in 2005, and she wasted no time making her mark, winning her first Senior U.S. Championship in the all around, bars and beam. She also placed second on floor. Nastia went on to the 2005 World Championships, where she won gold medals on bars and beam, finishing second to Chellsie Memmel in the all around.

Nastia fought injuries throughout the rest of the quadrennium, successfully defending her national all around title in 2006, but falling to third at the 2007 Visa Championships. Nastia went on to win gold at the 2007 World Championships with the U.S. team and also captured the win on balance beam.

Nastia came back strong in 2008, winning the all around titles at the Tyson American Cup and the Pacific Rim Championships. She made the 2008 Beijing Olympic team and helped the U.S. team to a silver medal.

Nastia was in peak form at the Games, winning the Olympic all-around title and finishing second on bars and beam, as well as third on floor, for a total of five medals at the Games. Nastia enjoyed her success post-Beijing, and announced her competitive comeback in 2011, with intent to make her second Olympic team in London.

Her first appearance back in competition was at the 2012 Secret Classic, where she only competed balance beam, finishing tied for third on the event. At the 2012 Visa Championships, Liukin added bars to her repertoire, but struggled overall in St. Louis.
