2012 was a breakout year for Douglas beginning when she was chosen as the alternate for the 2012 American Cup. At this competition, she turned heads when she delivered a very strong exhibition performance, beating the scores of all official competitors. At the 2012 Pacific Rim Championships in Washington, Gabby won uneven bars and was a member of the gold medal winning team.

Gabby competed three events at the 2012 Secret Classic, winning the uneven bars and tying for third on floor exercise. By this time, she was on everyone's radar as a strong contender to make the Olympic team. At the 2012 Visa Championships, she tied with defending National Champion, Jordyn Wieber, after day one of competition. Gabby fell on beam during day two of competition and ended up narrowly losing the All Around competition by only .2. However, she won the bars title and placed third on floor. Her results also allowed her to qualify to the Olympic Trials in San Jose.

At the Trials, Gabby bested U.S. National Champion and reigning World Champion Jordyn Wieber to win the event and earn an automatic spot on the U.S. Olympic Team.

2011 was Gabby's first season to compete as a senior international elite. At the CoverGirl Classic, Gabby placed 2nd on the uneven bars. At the 2011 Visa Championships, Gabby tied for 3rd on the uneven bars with a combined score of 29.45 and placed 7th in the All Around with a combined score of 110.35.

Gabby was named to the 2011 gold medal winning US World Team which competed in Tokyo, Japan. Gabby also tied for 5th on uneven bars at the World Championships.

Gabby has been a member of the US Women's National Team since 2010. She trains at Chow's Gymnastics and Dance Institute in West Des Moines, Iowa under coach Liang Chow who was also the coach of 2008 Olympian, Shawn Johnson.
