Shawn Johnson on beam at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara. This is during the team final competition. Johnson is the reigning Olympic Champion on beam and made her comeback to gymnastics in July of this year.

Too bad about the falls, but I wasn't expecting Shawn to be perfect here. This is her first international competition since the Olympics, so to expect her to be flawless isn't realistic. I'm really pleased to see that she's making upgrades, it shows that she's really serious about this comeback. Who will make the Olympics next year is still too close to call, but I'm happy the journey will be fun to watch. Go Shawn!! |

Xgym, splitting the beam means she fell, but take a look a Shawn's beam routine. When she does her split leap, her foot hits the beam then slides off the side and she almost straddles the beam. That's splitting the beam and it can be very painful. Shawn sort of saved herself from a full on split. Hope that helps. Someone else may have a better explanation. |

What does it mean if you "split the beam"? |

So Marta made the right choice
So I guess all those people who wanted Shawn flown out for Worlds, Marta knew best. I'm sure right now your thinking, well we don't know if she would have made mistakes and taken falls and your absolutely correct. However, Marta must have known that something could or would happen if she was on the team. Now I still don't agree with her on the Anna Li thing but on the Shawn Johnson decision, I think this competition proved she was right. |

Shawn looks great. The first tumbling pass is flawless. She has fallen on that switch leap before if you remember. I think she was thinking about the layouts after it and just got a little ahead of herself. She is almost there. She just needs a little more time, but she looks great. |

I really really hope she's ready for the Olympics but can't help feeling she left her comeback a year too late... and there's so much depth now on the team. There almost isn't room for her anymore... Still, a lot can happen in 10 months. This will probably spur her on, too, coz she'll be annoyed with herself. |

The routine definetley has potential but she needs way more numbers to make it consistent enough for major competitions (hello Olympic Games!) She definetley would not have been ready for Worlds and I wonder what these falls and the stall on UB means for her chances of making the Olympic Team... |

Her body looks fantastic... She just needs the numbers to boost her confidence. She has always been one to charge after each skill on beam with little hesitation. You can tell she wants to do exactly that in this routine but doesn't have the fluency yet. If she can stay healthy, I have no doubt that she will be a huge force. |

Yikes about the falls but love that she went for so many new upgrades. The two turns in a row worked out nicely. I'm impressed by the improved dance elements. |
