USA National Team Coordinator Martha Karolyi explains her selection of the 2011 USA Women's World Championships team. She and the selection committee picked the team last night at the conclusion of 2 selection camps at the Karolyi Ranch. The 7 girls who will travel to Tokyo for the 2011 World Championships are: Alicia Sacramone, Jordyn Wieber, Alexandra Raisman, Anna Li, McKayla Maroney, Gabrielle Douglas, and Sabrina Vega. Shawn Johnson has been named the non-traveling alternate and also selected to the 2011 Pan American Games which will take place in Mexico the week after World Championships.
Karolyi talks about the strategy in her team selection, the the depth of the US across each event, the plan for uneven bars, and why she left former World Champions Shawn Johnson, Chellsie Memmel and Bridget Sloan off the 2011 team.

I think it's a great team, with a strong experienced leader in ASac, without Bross Li fills a hole for bars, there is no doubting Maroney's or Douglas's skills. Raisman is proven talent and there is no question about Wieber. If everyone stays healthy Vega will be the alternate, but she has a good balance of skills. As for Johnson, Memmel and Sloan, they have a great resume, but none of the whiners know what they did at camp, and why rush their return to competition in light of their injuries. I think that most of the ing about selection comes from someone's favorite pet athlete not being put on the Worlds team without looking at the big picture, which is a strong, balanced, healthy team that can win TF. |

The only thing more corrupt than our own congress is the selection committee at these camps. Was this camp taped to get material for next seasons "Make it or Break it." Funny Marta's comments contradict how the team was selected. Is it a coincidence that the alternate selected for Pan AM just happens to go to a gym that someone on the selection committee's father owns? How dare there be an international competition take place that at least one person from this place is not there. Crap what was thatâ¦.oh I thought I saw a Pig just fly by. Maybe one day⦠There needs to be a 3rd party mediator and judges involved that looks at potential start values, past result history at competition, and other factors besides what happens at a "closed to the public" selection 2 day subjective competition. Nobody is held accountable and everyone turns their head when this type of thing happens. Too bad there is not an impeachment process or limited term in place similar to other elected office positions. Sorry to vent but after 20 years of watching this type of thing it gets to you. |

Finally loaded. good insights from Marta. That Memmel shoulder was more of a big deal than some people tried to play it off and Marta was right to worry about it at Nats. |

Not sure if it is the ads or the facebook or what, but something is glitching the system that used to run so well. :-( |
