In December of 1979 the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Because of that, President Jimmy Carter decided to boycott and pull all of our US athletes out of the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games. This boycott kept 12 American Gymnasts from reaching there dreams of competing for the United States at the Olympics. Knowing they weren't going to Moscow, these gymnasts wanted to take part in the olympic trial process and be named 1980 US Olympians. This weeks episode of Flash Back Friday is a tribute to that team.

Marcia was a member of the 1980 US Olympic team and was the first American woman to win a world championship gold medal, scoring a near-perfect 9.95, Strasbourg, France, (1978). Marcia had not established an international reputation; yet, even though she was first to perform in the UB finals, she won the world title beating Comaneci and the USSR’s Mukina who had just won the world AA title.
