Recruiting can be an intimidating process. A lot of gymnasts don't know what the coaches are looking for, how to present themselves to a coach, or even when they can start making contact. So, hopefully you can find your answers here. You're welcome to leave questions for others in the comment box below, or even questions you would like for me to ask in future interviews with coaches.
STAGES OF THE RECRUITING PROCESS
BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 1 of your JUNIOR YEAR of HIGH SCHOOL:
College coaches can now correspond with you through postal mail or email. Instant messaging and text messaging are no longer permitted.
BEGINNING JULY 1 FOLLOWING your JUNIOR YEAR of HIGH SCHOOL:
College coaches can now initiate telephone calls to you and your parents, but are only allowed to have one call to you per week.
BEGINNING JULY 15 FOLLOWING your JUNIOR YEAR of HIGH SCHOOL:
College coaches can start having off-campus contact with you and your parents. They are limited to a maximum of three off-campus contacts.
BEGINNING the FIRST DAY OF CLASSES in your SENIOR YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL:
You may start making official visits. You are limited to a maximum of five official visits.
The SECOND WEDNESDAY in NOVEMBER:
The early signing period for the National Letter of Intent (NLI) begins. This signing period lasts for only one week.
The SECOND WEDNESDAY in APRIL:
The late signing period for the National Letter of Intent (NLI) begins. This signing period continues until August 1.
What you can do ANYTIME:
You can call College Coaches anytime and as often you want. However, if you leave a message for them they can NOT return your call unless it is after July 1 following your junior year of high school, and only if they have not already initiated their one permitted call to you per week.
You can send College Coaches correspondence, but they are not permitted to correspond with you until you begin your junior year of high school.
You can have on-campus contact with College Coaches anytime during an “unofficial visit”. An unofficial visit is when you pay your own expenses to visit a campus. You may make as many unofficial visits to a campus as you would like.
