SPRINGFIELD, MA- Both the Cortland Red Dragons and Springfield Pride had a good day on Vault, a relative low scoring day on Bars, and some good and some bad on Beam, but it would be floor that decided the meet as Springfield hit a 48.2 to Cortland’s 46.725 taking the win in front of the home crowd 185.300 to 183.300. Both teams topped their current season high scores. Springfield came into the meet leading the ECAC in Beam and Floor scoring, and certainly they helped their standings with their Floor rotation. In fact SC leads all of Division 3 on the FX. Cortland is especially highly ranked on the Vault and that proved to be their best event of the day scorewise.

Cortland’s Christine Haungs was the only all arounder but she put up a 37.025 on the day. Springfield’s Brittany Baglow set a personal record with a 9.7 to win the floor, teammates Carly Flynn and Ericca Castagna also had personal highs of 9.675 and 9.65 respectively to take 2nd and 3rd. SC’s Kayleigh Davis, and Cortland’s Haungs and Jenn Najuch tied for fourth with 9.6s. Najuch was named ECAC Specialist of the week last week for her FX performance.

On the Uneven Bars Cortland’s Kasey Cutler won the event with a 9.3, her fellow Red Dragon Cady Tinney was second with a 9.2, and SC’s Megan German led the team with her third place 9.0 finish.

Castagna unveiled a new vault which earned her a 9.675 and the event title for the day as well as a personal best. Cortland’s Chris Cate took second with a 9.575 and Jeanna Bradle of SC took third with along with Najuch with 9.55’s. Haungs was fifth with a 9.5, and Brittany Davis sixth with a 9.45.

On the Beam, Audrey Lastra took first for SC with a 9.65, Haungs was second with a 9.6, Baglow set another personal best with a 9.450, Cortland’s Ashley Fleming hit a 9.45, and SC’s Danielle Trota had a personal best of her own with a 9.3. Amanda Record from SUNY-C rounded out the top 6 with her 9.150.

There were plenty of gymnasts on both sides that were ranked up there in the division 3 rankings on many events and the close individual scoring reflected that.

Next week Springfield heads down to Division 1 Ivy League Yale. Neither team has scholarships, though Yale has been outscoring SC in the team ranks. However, individually, there will likely be a close competition as SC has plenty of gymnasts especially on Vault and Floor that can match Yale's scorers at this point.

Cortland is headed down to Rutgers to take on the D1 team, as well as D3 ECAC teams Brockport and Ursinus. Brockport currently resides at the top of not only the ECAC but also the Division 3 national rankings. Any time the ECAC teams come together it's a big deal and there will be 3 in Piscataway.

Special thanks to Steve Raczynski, Springfield Sports Information, SC Head Coach Cheryl Raymond, gymnasts Ericca Castagna, Audrey Lastra, and Brittany Baglow, SUNY Cortland head coach Gary Babjack and senior captain Christine Haungs, and to Cortland SID Fran Elia as well.
