In this sport, some routines at every meet from level 3 to elite will either be unfairly overscored or overscored. It's just part of life and there's no point in mulling over it. Just move on...next!
I would have to say she is one of the best beam worker in NCAA because it looks so easy for her when she hits her beam, you dont need to have huge skills to score high you just have to be clean! Thats one thing Hollie Vise is is CLEAN! Everyone no matter how good they are will make mistakes every once and a while. She is way to good to be ripping on her!
I was under the impression that all college gymnastics is overscored. It seems the judges overlook mistakes if they are covered up well, or if they are relatively minor... I guess I'm just cynical, but I thought it was presumed to be that way. I mean, just look at all the 9.8s & 9.9s that are given to routines that would get 9.5-9.6 in a JO competition.
Amy, I really appreciate all your coverage, and you go for defending yourselves. Yes this routine was overscored, but there's nothing that can be done about it now so let's move on.
It does not matter if it counted or not! The point is it was overscored. What if they had someone else fall and they did have to count this score? The judges want to make sure that they give the best score they can because "every little tenth counts" and they dont want to see the home team loose, especially since they havent lost. They didnt want a team like this to beat them.
Seriously people drop it, her score didn't even count toward the team total so why create all this nonsense. So what if this is the first time Oklahoma got over scored on something. It's not like this has never happened to any other school.
I disagree with Amy. I am a former judge and am from Oklahoma - but live in Alabama now. First of all, where is the difficulty? Second, not only did she fall, she left an element out and failed to connect - Not to mention several balance checks. I know you only see the routine one time, but as a judge you are required to pay attention to the one time routine. Plus, the mistakes were extremely obvious. A judge will see the balance checks from where they sit. A real wake up for Hollie will be at the NCAA's. She would have not scored this at Alabama even if she was an Alabama gymnast. A fall and this many balance checks and an element left out would have been in my opinion as a judge (8.95). These judges obviously are scoring the routines too high.
I agree with gymfan, the score was obviously inflated. Amy's right that judges may not have quite as good of an angle, but there's no way that would've been a 9.875 without the fall. Amy, do please keep posting the scores!!
Overscores happen from time to time for all teams, but it was pretty blatant at this meet for OU (mainly on FX). Hollie Vise is certainly one of the top beam workers in NCAA, but a 9.325 for this routine is ridiculous!
I will say though that OU is definitely a contender. NCAAs should be very interesting this year.
The coverage of TWU and Nebraska seem a little slim compared OU. I attended the meet and some of the better routines didn't seem to make the cut. I know it would be impossible to record every routine, and as fans we appreciate all the videos that are put up and the effort you put forward, however it seems that the seemingly "unbiased" coverage comment made earlier doesn't really hold up.
First of all, I love how you all are making a HUGE deal with this score when it did not even count for the team score, second of all, others school such as Alabama, Georgia, Florida all get home scoring as well it is something that just happens with colligiate gymnastics, and last is that I agree with Amy if you all are just going to complain about every little thing well...dont
I think that perhaps a different angle might have yielded a different perspective (judges.) However that said I would have to agree that this score was somewhat inflated for the routine that she did. Yes she is Hollie Vise. Yes she does USUALLY do amazing routines on beam! This seemed to just not be her night on this event!
I would like to second Amy in saying that personal attacks are not necessary. I wasn't able to make it to the meet Friday so I'm happy to see the coverage provided (including scores!!) :D
The only remarks that need to be made about the score should be towards the judges because they are the ones who gave the OUTRAGEOUS score of 9.325!!!!
You know, I really don't feel that personal attacks are necessary. If you have a problem with the coverage I'm giving you, I suggest you send me a message on here, rather than hiding behind anonymous comments. I'm open to constructive criticism and appreciate feedback, but you don't need to be rude about it.
I was merely saying that sometimes you see things differently depending on your angle. This is nothing new - commentators on TV frequently mention the angles they get on their replays and how they are different from what the judges see. We are also blessed with the capability to rewind/pause these videos on here. The judges only get to see it once. If you have such problems with the overscoring, I suggest you become a judge and try to remedy it yourself.
I realize that I do indeed go to school here at OU, but I try my absolute hardest not to be biased, and I feel that I do a pretty good job doing so. I wasn't trying to defend Hollie or her score, because it's not my job to do that, I was just raising the possibility that the angle from which we see her routine could account for some of the differences in scoring between a viewer or the judges.
Whether or not anyone thinks this or any routine is overscored, that's your opinion which you are entitled to, and I'm not here to pass judgement on that.
Perhaps it would be better for me not to post scores?? I just thought people might like to see them, but if it's going to cause issues on here I'll be happy to leave them off.
I agree, had it not been someone with the name "hollie vise," this routine would not score that high. she has wobbles and connection problems throughout the routine, not to mention the fall. that score is outragous
Yes I'm sure that the judges cant see those wobbles from their location of right next to the beam. I know that you are slightly bias, but lets be honest, that comment is outrageously incorrect.
Nope, it said 9.325 on the official score sheet I got at the end of the meet. She covers things up like a champ so maybe the wobbles weren't so obvious from the judges' angle? For example, the back walkover was really out of line but you probably couldn't see it as severely from the side angle, I think you can see the alignment issue more from my angle.
how in the heck is this a 9.325? She had .5 in wobbles alone, not counting the fall. They were leniant and gave her the connection I assume for her flight series. But the full turn, the pivot turn, the back walkover was out of line and she bent her arms on it, the ring jump, all wobbles...I do not get it. Is the score posted wrong? this is not a 9.00 routine, sorry but it's not
I will say though that OU is definitely a contender. NCAAs should be very interesting this year.
