The drill is good but even better if the power in the snap is coming from the core and shoulders, arch to pike is usually not the best way. Flicking your hands (shoving the mat away by pushing down with your hands against the mat) helps snap your chest up. As far as going backwards or forwards, it depends on each skill, if you're wanting to train for double twist or more twists you want to try to snap back farther and rebound to the block or mat. If you want to work layouts or doubles the snap back will not be as deep and the rebound will go more to vertical.

it makes sure they're chest is up if they have to jump up to the block afterwards

what is the point of this drill? Don't you want to teach gymnasts to go backwards after they snap down, not forwards?

You can also do this onto a Mini Tramp and do layouts, Twisting, Doubles.. Whatever you want.. Tons of fun;)

I forgot to say, try to keep your knees as straight as possible when you're going for the backhandspring, the only way you can do this is if you snap in hard enough. When your knees are straight, you did it right.
